Excavate – COMPOSIT:
Excavate is the flagship competition of COMPOSIT, focused on data analysis and analytical problem-solving in metallurgical and materials engineering. The event challenges participants to work with real-world datasets, extract meaningful insights, and propose innovative, feasible, and structured solutions. It bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications by providing hands-on exposure to data-driven engineering decisions. Participants gain practical experience, analytical confidence, and a deeper understanding of applying data science tools to real-life engineering problems. Excavate is one of the most technically demanding and enriching events of COMPOSIT.
Event Structure:
Round 1 – Aptitude Quiz Round:
Eligibility: Open to all participants.
Mode: Online (conducted on Unstop).
Format: Fast-paced aptitude quiz.
Number of questions: 10.
Time limit: 30 minutes.
Scoring Criteria:
Evaluation based on the number of correct answers.
In case of a tie, submission timing will be considered.
Negative marking: 0.25 marks deducted for each incorrect answer.
Round 2 – Problem Statement Analysis (Submission via Email):
Eligibility: Top performers from Round 1. Qualified teams will be notified via email.
Mode: Remote submission via email.
Format: Data analysis and technical solution submission.
Problem statement: To be announced.
Submission requirements:
Jupyter Notebook containing the complete analysis and model.
A PPT of up to 10 slides including a team introduction slide.
A detailed report covering problem understanding, data preprocessing, analysis, model methodology, insights, and results.
Submission must be sent via email (email ID to be updated).
Evaluation:
Depth of analysis.
Soundness of the model.
Accuracy and relevance of results.
Clarity of presentation.
Top teams will advance to the offline final round at IIT Kharagpur.
Round 3 – Final Presentation Round (Offline | IIT Kharagpur):
Eligibility: Top teams shortlisted from Round 2. Qualified teams will be notified via email.
Location: IIT Kharagpur Campus.
Format: On-campus presentation before a panel of judges.
Presentation duration: 10 minutes.
Q&A duration: 5 minutes.
Evaluation Criteria:
Problem understanding.
Data analysis quality, modelling approach.
Accuracy of insights.
Presentation skills and Q&A responses.
Final rankings will be based on overall performance. Judges’ decision will be final and binding.
Prize Money:
Total prize pool worth ₹30,000. Top 3 teams will receive cash prizes, medals, and certificates. All participants who submit an abstract will receive participation certificates.
Team Composition:
Maximum of 3 participants per team, including the team leader. Individual participation is also allowed.
General Guidelines:
All teams and members must register on Unstop and the official COMPOSIT website. Presentations must not exceed 10 slides including the team introduction slide. Presentation duration must strictly adhere to the 10-minute limit. Any violation of rules may result in immediate disqualification. Judges’ decisions are final and binding.
