The KRITI Social Impact Challenge is a flagship hackathon initiative to be conducted during APOGEE 2026, the annual technical festival of BITS Pilani. The challenge is designed to encourage students and innovators to develop practical, technology-driven solutions that address critical problems faced by rural communities.
The primary aim of this initiative is to nurture startups and innovation-driven projects focused on social welfare, with a strong emphasis on solving problems at the grassroots level. The challenge seeks to bring together young innovators who are willing to apply engineering, technology, and entrepreneurial thinking to create solutions that can generate meaningful and lasting impact in underserved communities.
Participants will be encouraged to identify real-world challenges and develop affordable, scalable, and implementable solutions that can be realistically adopted by rural populations.
The emphasis of the challenge will be on frugal innovation, ensuring that the proposed solutions remain economically accessible and practical for large-scale deployment across villages and small towns.
The Topic of the Hackathon is:
Frugal Innovation for Rural North India: Design affordable, scalable solutions addressing real challenges faced by rural communities.
The problem areas that participants may explore include, but are not limited to:
Low-cost farm automation to improve agricultural productivity and reduce manual labor for farmers.
Water conservation technologies that help rural communities manage limited water resources efficiently, particularly in drought-prone regions.
Water purification and cleansing solutions that ensure access to safe and clean drinking water at the village level.
Affordable rural energy solutions, including decentralized renewable energy systems such as small-scale solar infrastructure or micro-grids.
Agricultural supply chain improvements that reduce post-harvest losses and improve farmers’ access to markets.
Climate-resilient agricultural practices and technologies that help farmers adapt to changing environmental conditions.
Waste management and sanitation systems designed for rural settlements.
Participants are also free to explore any other challenge relevant to rural and semi-urban communities, provided the proposed solution addresses a genuine problem and demonstrates clear potential for impact.
A key component of the KRITI Social Impact Challenge is its commitment to supporting promising ideas beyond the competition. The most impactful and feasible solutions will be selected for further support through grants or fellowship opportunities, enabling teams to continue developing their ideas into sustainable social enterprises or non-profit initiatives. Through this continued support, the initiative aims to bridge the gap between innovation and real-world implementation, empowering students to transform ideas into projects that can bring tangible benefits to society.
Through this platform, KRITI aims to promote responsible innovation, encourage socially conscious entrepreneurship, and foster the development of solutions that can contribute meaningfully to rural development in India.Visit KRITI's LinkedIn page using this link : KRITI LinkedIn
