Code Clutch — Arcade Game Dev Challenge by Athena, BVCOE
You don't need game dev experience. You don't need to know how to code. If you've ever played Flappy Bird or Chrome's Dino Run, you already understand the assignment.
Code Clutch is a 3-day hackathon where you build a simple 2D arcade game inspired by internet meme culture. Day 3 is a live public arcade exhibition at BVCOE where your game gets played, judged, and rated.
WHAT YOU'RE BUILDING
A short, browser-playable 2D arcade game: endless runner, flappy-style, dodger, clicker, platformer, top-down avoider; built around a meme. The meme reference must be recognisable and intentional; existing memes and original meme concepts are both fair game.
More details in the attached rulebook.
WHO CAN JOIN
Solo or teams of up to 4
Open to all colleges, not just BVCOE
At least one team member must attend Day 3 in person at BVCOE for award eligibility
JUDGING
100 points across 4 categories — organiser scores combined with live audience feedback.
Meme Creativity — how clear, clever, and actually funny is the concept
Gameplay Fun — enjoyable core loop, score, progression, or satisfying challenge
Visual Polish — intentional art style, readable UI, good itch.io thumbnail
Completeness — launches, runs, reaches an end state, playable by a stranger with no instructions
Technical complexity is not judged.
SUBMISSION
Upload your game to itch.io as a browser-playable HTML5 build and submit the public link via the official form before April 17, 12:00 PM. Your submission must include a working itch.io link, a game title with short description, and an AI tool disclosure.
